CES Northwest Symposium 2008

Know Each Student

Welcome to the 2008 CESNW/SSP Summer Symposium registration page. From here, you can register for any of the summer learning activities we are offering during the last week in June.

In addition to a great week of institutes, beginning with the CESNW Symposium on Monday, we are pleased to have two very talented and dynamic speakers join us to deliver keynote addresses.

Pat Wasley, a former Senior Researcher for School Change at CES, has completed her eighth year as Dean of the College of Education at the University of Washington. During that time, she has built numerous partnerships with Seattle-area schools and districts and has placed social justice at the heart of the College's mission. She is the primary author of Kids and School Reform, an in-depth look at four CES schools, and of Small Schools, Great Strides, a key contribution to the research on small schools.
Kathleen Cushman writes for a national audience about the lives and learning of adolescents. Her most noted publications include Fires in the Bathroom, and the two-volume First in the Family: Advice about College from First-Generation Students. For 13 years, Cushman was the author and editor of Horace, the journal that did much to spread CES ideas to practitioners in schools. Cushman is also a co-founder of the Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School in Massachusetts.

The CESNW Symposium offers the opportunity to learn about and share CES ideas and practices with colleagues from around the region. Four of our institutes — service learning, culminating projects, student voice, and socratic seminar — focus on what happens in classrooms, the heart of any serious effort to support excellent and equitable schools. Three others — a look at systems thinking, coaching strategies, and a highly successful professional learning community design — acknowledge the key role that adult learning plays in having schools that serve each student well. As always, clock hours will be available for all our institutes.

We hope you will join us for the CESNW/SSP Summer Symposium at Mt. Rainier High School.
